Data-driven Goal Setting: Searching Optimal Badges in the Decision Forest

نویسندگان

چکیده

Goal setting is vital in learning sciences, but the scientific evaluation of optimal goals underexplored. This study proposes a novel methodological approach to determine goals. The data this comes from gamified app implemented an undergraduate accounting course at large German university. With combination decision trees and regression analyses, connected badges are evaluated. results show that initial badge set already motivated strategies led better grades on exam. However, indicate levels could be improved, additional implemented. In addition new goal levels, types also discussed. findings initially determined by instructors need evaluated offer motivational effect. used can easily transferred other sets provide further insights.

Parallel or event-driven goal setting mechanism in Petri net based models of expert decision behaviour

Decisions and actions produced by computer users (observed process) contain much information about their mental models, individual problem solving strategy and underlying decision structure for a given task. Our tool AMME analyses observed processes and automatically extracts a Petri net description of the task dependent decision structure (logical structure). This net is extended by goal setti...

Data mining for decision making in engineering optimal design

Often in modeling the engineering optimization design problems, the value of objective function(s) is not clearly defined in terms of design variables. Instead it is obtained by some numerical analysis such as FE structural analysis, fluid mechanic analysis, and thermodynamic analysis, etc. Yet, the numerical analyses are considerably time consuming to obtain the final value of objective functi...

ProgettoBosco, a Data-Driven Decision Support System for forest planning

As a consequence of the spread of technology, also the forest sector needs to develop methods and tools capable to integrate the new available technology (Geographical Information Systems, databases, Decision Support Systems, GPS, satellite imaging, laser etc.) with the traditional tools. In specific the present paper refers to the context of forest planning and management and to the implementa...

Goal-Driven and Data-Driven Metacognitive Monitoring

Research in metacognition (Koriat, Ma'ayan, & Nussinson, 2006) suggests bi-directional links between monitoring and control during learning: When self-regulation is goal-driven, monitoring affects control so that increased study time (ST) enhances judgments of learning (JOLs), but when it is data-driven, JOLs are based on the feedback from control, and therefore JOLs decrease with ST under the ...

Behavioral Mechanisms Prompted by Badges: The Goal-Gradient Hypothesis

This paper describes our research which empirically investigates the applicability of the goal-gradient hypothesis to the activation of user contributions on a popular German Question & Answer community through badges. The goal-gradient hypothesis states that the motivation to reach a goal increases with proximity to the goal. The issue – of interest to academics and website managers alike – is...
